Carmen Fuentes

Obituary for Carmen Antonio “Toño” Fuentes Carmen Antonio Fuentes, affectionately known as Toño, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, at 7:12 PM in Missoula, Montana, after a vibrant and passionate life that touched many. Born in Santa Rosa de Lima, El Salvador, to Brijida Fuentes Salmeron and Eduardo Hernandez, Toño lived a life marked by resilience, adventure, and a fierce sense of independence. At just seven years old, Toño began his life of adventure by joining his older brother aboard a ship, where his brother served as captain. This early experience sparked a lifelong love for movement, hard work, and discovery. At nineteen, Toño joined La Vigilancia Nacional, a branch of El Salvador’s security forces tasked with intelligence, internal security, and policing during a turbulent era of political unrest and military control. He served with intensity and resolve for nine and a half years, until the escalating violence in his homeland compelled him to seek a safer life. At age 27, Toño emigrated to the United States and became a legal resident in 1974. Soon after, he brought his beloved Maria Esperanza Aguiluz Fuentes to join him in Inglewood, California, where they raised their three children together until 1998. An entrepreneur at heart, Toño poured his energy into carpentry, landscaping, and home remodeling, working tirelessly on homes across Southern California. His hands shaped not only physical spaces but countless experiences for those who knew him. After living in several states, Toño eventually settled in Houston, Texas, where he lived for over 15 years before retiring. In the final chapter of his life, he moved to Missoula, Montana, to live with his daughter Diana and son-in-law Michael. There, he spent his last days immersed in the beauty around him—watching white-tailed deer and wild turkeys, enjoying Smoke Tones cocktails at Montgomery Distillery, sipping café au lait and savoring burrata toast at Florabella, shopping, laughing, trying new things, and relishing the company of his family and the welcoming community of Missoula. Toño enjoyed many pleasures in life, especially gardening, listening to music—whether romantic classics from the 1940s or lively cumbia from across Central America—and living life with enthusiasm. A romantic and charismatic man, Toño loved more than his fair share of women and was never short on stories, laughter, or energy. He was known for his animated personality, relentless drive, and his unmatched gift for storytelling. Toño is survived by his three children: Eduardo Antonio Fuentes, Ana E. Fuentes, and Diana Elizabeth Fuentes Bushey; and his nine cherished grandchildren: Marco Aurelio Fuentes, Ana Maria Fuentes, Luis Antonio Fuentes, Emily Delilah Fuentes, Alvaro Eduardo Fuentes, Angel Christian Fuentes, Elijah Izaiah Fuentes, Luz E. Fuentes-Villagrana, and Luciano S. Fuentes-Villagrana. Toño’s legacy lives on in every garden grown, every melody danced to, and every story passed down. He was passionate, restless, and unforgettable—always building, always moving, always living. May his journey onward be as vibrant as the life he led.
