Richard Morris Williams
June 9th, 1954 - November 9th, 2023
June 9th, 1954 - November 9th, 2023
Richard “Dick” Morris Williams, born on June 9th, 1954, in Des Moines, Iowa, lived a life as diverse and rich as the landscapes he explored. He passed away on November 9th, 2023, in his home and surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of unique experiences and captivating tales.
A true Renaissance man, Richard wore many hats throughout his life. From dog groomer and animal control officer to chef, hobby photographer, and member of a punk rock band in San Francisco during the '70s, he approached life with a natural curiosity and undeniable coolness in everything he pursued.
Having found a home in many corners of the United States, from the Midwest to the West Coast, and extending beyond its continental borders to places like Alaska and northern Mexico in his younger years, Richard possessed a noteworthy ability to adapt to different environments. Eventually, he found his home in Montana, where he lived for the past 27 years. His love for exploration ignited a lifelong fascination with different cultures, ultimately leading him to art school where he refined his artistic skills. His passion for art never waned. Even in his final months, he remained dedicated to his work, infusing his canvases with the unique touches that defined his creative spirit.
As the son of a professor and a seamstress in his small hometown of Madison, South Dakota, family played a central role in his life. One of five brothers, Richard carried the values of education, creativity, and adventure with him throughout his journey. Richard met his wife, Robbi, in San Francisco, California in 1979. As she tells it, he came home with her one day and never left. This union became the foundation of a family filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.
One role that Richard valued above all else was that of being a father, and more recently, a grandfather. As a sometimes-stay-at-home dad during his two daughters’ childhoods, he embraced the role with warmth and enthusiasm, often visiting the girls’ schools and volunteering in their classrooms. His interests became shared family adventures — whether it was camping, backpacking, canoeing, impromptu road trips, or exploring the world of stamp collecting or ancient archaeology, he made every moment an adventure.
His love for music, especially rock and roll, was infectious. Richard played the bass guitar and passed on his musical wisdom to his children, creating a bond that transcended generations. Whether recounting tales from the punk rock scene or sharing insights into the evolution of rock and roll, he captivated those around him with his wisdom and wit.
His interests in history, archaeology, herbalism, and collecting antique books showcased his intellectual curiosity. He was a walking encyclopedia of everything from ancient Rome to the '60s and '70s, always ready to share a tidbit of knowledge or a cool fact.
Richard is survived by his wife, Robbi, his daughters, Katherine and Molly, his son in law Joey, grandson Ezra, and brothers - Mark, Kenny, Tom, and Pat, as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Joyce Williams.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held on December 3rd, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates contributions to the ongoing disability care fund for his daughter Molly, who has Down Syndrome.
Let us remember Richard for the incredible journey he undertook, the stories he shared, and the love he bestowed upon those fortunate enough to know him.

My deepest sympathy for Dick’s family. I have fond memories of our grade school days at Lincoln Elementary school and beyond in Madison, SD. He was truly a very creative person. May he rest in peace. Love and hugs. Pam Randall Hetland
