Dorothy "Dottie" Patricia Bixby
August 25th, 1943 - April 9th, 2025
August 25th, 1943 - April 9th, 2025
Dorothy Patricia Bixby (née Beal) was born on August 25, 1943, in Englewood, Colorado to Edward Russell Beal and Margaret DorothyBeal (née Jesser). The youngest of three, she grew up in Englewood with her beloved older brothers, Robert Eugene and Edward Russell Jr., who preceded her in death.
On March 13, 1964, Dottie married the love of her life, William Tenny Bixby. Their marriage was a testament to her deep devotion, unwavering support, and a life centered on love and family. Together, they raised two sons, David Eugene (Linda Bailey) and Mark Everett (Jody Lyle), and created a home filled with adventure, warmth, and encouragement.
Dottie, or “Grammy” as she was affectionately known, brought her boundless love to her grandchildren: Kristofer Adams, and Naomi, Martha, and Florence Byrne. With Kris, she shared a special bond of adventure—whether parasailing over the ocean or hiking the wilds of Glacier National Park, she was always up for the next thrill. For the Byrne girls, she was their beloved mischief-maker, caretaker, and morning wrangler—particularly during Florence’s kindergarten year.
Dottie said “yes” to life. Yes to adventure. Yes to imagination. Yes to love. Whether you told her you wanted to be an artist or a barnstormer, she cheered you on with all her heart. At 50, she showed the same courage and determination when she returned to school and became a registered nurse—a natural calling for someone so empathetic, kind, and generous.
Dottie had a deep reverence for the natural world. She loved wildflowers, the quiet beauty of a forest walk, and connecting with animals, especially Lilly the horse and the many animals who blessed her life—Angie, Roxy, Arrow, Mia, Phoebe, Thelma and Bingo,. She lived in wonder, often reflecting on our connection to all living things, and drew inspiration from the gentle wisdom of Mr. Rogers, whose ideals she embodied with grace.
She had an adventurous soul and a “can-do” spirit that kept her climbing mountains, paddling into the wind, and recounting unforgettable bear encounters with a twinkle in her eye. She met life’s physical and emotional challenges with courage and curiosity. Even in her final days, she delighted in the simple joy of story time, asking for “just one more chapter” on visits with family.
Her family was her joy and her pride. She never missed a chance to celebrate birthdays, cheer at performances, or offer encouragement with her whole heart. She was a constant, radiant presence— someone whose absence will be felt in every gathering, every milestone, every quiet moment.
Dottie’s life was her message. As Mark, her son, shared:
“Always, always, always say ‘yes’ to adventure and trying new things.
Helping others is the highest expression of our humanity.
Breathe deeply. Listen to the birds. Remember that we are connected to everything.
Pet every dog.
Be selfless, be kind, and celebrate the joy of others.
Even when you doubt it the most, know that you are enough.
These are the most important lessons my Mom taught me in life. I wish she hadn’t sacrificed so much to give us what she thought we needed. But that’s just who she was.
Love you, love you, love you, Momma.”
And from her husband Bill:
“61 years as a devoted, loving wife.
Always putting family first, no matter the sacrifice required.
A constant source of strength, love, and wisdom for everyone, but especially me.”
She leaves behind her beloved husband Bill, her sons David and Mark, daughters-in-law Linda and Jody, and her treasured grandchildren. She also leaves behind a wide circle of family and friends who were touched by her kindness, generosity, and luminous spirit.
Dottie Bixby lived with courage, tenderness, and heart. She taught us to seek beauty, cherish one another, and embrace the adventure. Her presence was a gift. Her love, a legacy.
