Margaret Thompson

Margaret Maye Thompson, a woman whose life radiated joy, compassion, and unwavering love, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025. She was the sunshine in every room, the steady hand in every storm, and the heart of a family that adored her.

Margaret was born in 1936 in Conrad, Montana, to Carroll and Katherine Kavanagh. Her childhood was filled with wonder and warmth, especially during the ten summers she spent at Kelly’s Camp on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park with her mother, father, sister Carolyn, and brother John. Those days were among her most cherished childhood memories. The sudden loss of her mother in 1949, when Margaret was just 12, marked a profound turning point. Even then, her strength and selflessness began to shine.

After her mother’s passing, Margaret’s Aunt Marjorie Johnson arranged for her to attend Brownmoor School for Girls in Phoenix, Arizona. She later returned to Shelby, Montana, where she graduated from Shelby High School in 1954. With her sister Carolyn having moved to Spokane, Margaret took on the responsibility of caring for her younger brother and father—roles she embraced with quiet grace and deep devotion.

She later earned an associate business degree from Kinman Business School in Spokane. In 1959, she married Thomas T. Thompson, in Shelby. They were devoted to each other for 66 years, having shared wonderful memories traveling as a family, wintering in Arizona and building friendships along the way. Together, they raised four children—Kelly, Sandra, Natalie, and Tom—who were the center of their world.

Everything Margaret did was with her children in mind. She was their greatest advocate, their comfort, and their guide. Her love was unconditional, her presence constant. She was the glue that held the family together, always nurturing the bonds between her children and ensuring that love, kindness, and understanding were at the heart of their lives. She was the peacemaker, the listener, the one who reminded everyone what truly mattered.

Though she held various part-time roles as a bookkeeper and secretary, Margaret’s true vocation was motherhood. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and unwavering support.

Margaret was also deeply committed to her community—serving in the Stephen Ministry at Atonement Lutheran Church in Missoula, volunteering with the “Road to Recovery” cancer program, and supporting the Battered Women’s Shelter.

Her care extended across her family. She lovingly supported her father through his battle with Alzheimer’s and remained a devoted sister and friend. After the passing of her sister Carolyn, she and her brother John formed an unbreakable bond, lifting each other through life’s joys and sorrows.

Margaret’s legacy lives on most vividly through her children and grandchildren, who carry forward her values of compassion, faith, resilience, and love. She delighted in watching her family grow, celebrating every milestone and offering her unwavering support through every chapter of their lives.

A cornerstone of that legacy is the family cabin in Essex, Montana—a place Margaret lovingly transformed over the years into a sanctuary for her family. Nestled near the edge of Glacier National Park, the cabin became more than a retreat; it was a home filled with laughter, stories, and the echoes of generations. Margaret poured her heart into making it a place where her children and grandchildren could gather, connect, and create lasting memories. Her spirit will forever linger in the rustling pines, the crackle of the fire, and the quiet peace of the mountain air.

Margaret found joy in life’s simplest pleasures. She was an avid gardener and loved nothing more than a round of golf with friends or a lively game of bridge. Her morning walks with her dear friend Kay (her “BFF”) were a treasured ritual—filled with conversation, laughter, and deep connection. A devoted reader, Margaret was rarely without a book in hand, her curiosity and love of learning enduring throughout her life.

She embraced each day with a sense of adventure and fun. In a beautiful reflection of her spirit, the day before her passing, Margaret cast aside her usual bedtime and attended a band concert at Bonner Park in Missoula. Though her vision may have been seeing double (due to her late-night activities), those around her saw something far clearer: a woman fully alive in the moment—savoring music, companionship, and pure joy.

Margaret’s legacy is one of grace, strength, and boundless love. She leaves behind a family forever shaped by her example and a world made better by her presence.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and no service will be held. If you would like to honor Margaret’s memory, she deeply cared about the following two organizations:
·         Glacier National Park Conservancy
·         Samaritans Purse
