Souvenirs

Vern Cecil Jolliff, 85, of Missoula, Montana, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, at St. Patrick Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 17, 1939, in St. Maries, Idaho, to Jimmie and Rachel Jolliff. Vern was the oldest of three children, with sisters Nancy and Jan. The family later moved to Missoula, where Vern would spend most of his life.

Vern proudly served in the U.S. Navy, enlisting on October 1, 1959. He spent time aboard the USS Ajax AR-6, traveling overseas to Japan, where he worked as the ship's barber. After an honorable discharge from active duty on March 25, 1961, he continued his service in the Navy Reserves for two more years.

On September 2, 1961, Vern married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Flynn, whom he had met at the Wilma Theater in Missoula. They shared a love that spanned more than six decades, raising two children, Jay Dee Jolliff (born October 1963) and Tamara (Tami) Leigh Jolliff (born December 1966).

Vern worked for many years at the Frenchtown Paper Mill, where he later retired. He was an avid fan of the Montana Grizzlies and could always be found wearing Griz gear while watching their football games. He also had a deep love for dogs, and throughout his life, he was always accompanied by a loyal pet dog, most recently his beloved Sophie. Vern’s passion for gardening was evident in his meticulously cared-for yard, flowers, and especially his tomato plants. His talent for woodworking was also showcased in the beautiful wooden bears he crafted, some of which are still on display at Paradise Falls in Missoula.

On Friday nights, Vern and Sharon made it a tradition to dine together at the Double Front, where they enjoyed their favorite fried chicken. Vern also had a playful side, often spending time at the local Keno machines, always ready to play a $5. He was a dedicated family man who cherished his time with his children and especially his grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy, and he found immense pride in watching them grow.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie and Rachel Jolliff. He is survived by his children, Jay Jolliff and Tami (Doug) Hayes; his five grandchildren, Jessica, Justin, Coleman, Janae and Alissa; his great-grandchild, Jaxton; and his beloved dog, Sophie.

A celebration of Vern’s life will be held at a later date.

Vern’s legacy of love, dedication, and warmth will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community.
