VICTOR ~ David G. Sumida, a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2023, at the age of 72, in his cherished home in Victor, Montana. Born in Pocatello, Idaho, in 1951, David was the son of George and Kae Sumida and grew up alongside his siblings Cheryl and Larry in Pocatello. He excelled academically and graduated from Poky High School with numerous honors and accomplishments. Throughout his life, David was known for his unwavering passion and dedication to the things he loved. Whether it was cycling, rock climbing, or skiing, he threw himself wholeheartedly into each pursuit. It was during his time in Mammoth, California, indulging in his love for downhill skiing, that he crossed paths with the love of his life, Anji. David's heart quickly shifted focus to Anji, and he made a grand gesture of his love by declaring that he would throw his skis in the road for her. They were married on February 28, 1974, and David embraced his new role as a father of his first daughter, Flower. Soon after, the family grew with the addition of their second daughter, Yaeko. In 1976, the Sumida family relocated to the picturesque Bitterroot Valley. Together, they embarked on a labor of love, building their home from the ground up. Over the next 46 years, David's skills as a carpenter flourished, and he honed his talent as an artist. Alongside Anji, he showcased and sold their watercolor paintings across the Western states. In his mid-forties, David found his final love in golf. The green fairways became his sanctuary, and he spent countless hours on the golf course, challenging himself and forming lasting friendships. And while he might have thrown his skis in the road for young love, he never once offered to throw his clubs in the road. David's enthusiasm for the sport led to numerous adventures with old friends, exploring new courses. David swung his clubs as often as possible until he couldn’t physically do it anymore. David is survived by his loving wife, Anji Sumida, and his two devoted daughters and their families: Flower Sumida (Stephen McCord) of Nashville and Yaeko (Matt) Rodrigues of Eugene. He is also survived by his sister Cheryl Porter of Boise and his brother Larry Sumida of Rock Springs. David's legacy extends to his four cherished grandchildren: Kai, Jude, Pearl, and George. David G. Sumida will be fondly remembered for his adventurous spirit, artistic talents, and dedication to those he held dear. His warm smile, zest for life, and genuine friendships will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to a loving husband, devoted father, and treasured friend, we find solace in the countless memories and the lasting impact he made on our lives. A celebration of life is planned for June 2024 at their home in Victor, MT. Details will follow.
