LOIS MILLER COVAULT “Seek to serve, look for beauty and share it. ” — Lois’ life philosophy. She developed it and she lived it. Lois passed December 27, 2022 at 1:30 pm with peace and comfort and dignity. (Photo about 1980) Lois created beauty in all the places we lived, from the many ranger station houses to our acreage in Missoula. In her gardens, in her family, in her volunteer work and in her words, she brought wonder and enjoyment. Meal times were a place to share our daily adventures, and to Lois, a tool to nurture and grow our family. An expected sit-down-together time brought us each a sense of comfort, security and unconditional love. To me, beauty is Lois sewing a quilt in her lap on a winter evening. Needle and thread in her skilled hands, stitching. Hundreds of just-right pieces of material with thousands upon thousands of small stitches became blankets of beauty, comfort and art. Lois’ passion for words are deep and thoughtful. Her letters, notes and memoirs create pictures and beauty. Her Apple Street Stories and Home On The Ranger Station memoirs are a legacy to her life and enjoyable to read. Lois, intelligent and competitive at a time when young women had no outlet for intelligence and competitiveness. One of the first to read Betty Friedan’s, Feminine Mystique, she and other foresters’ wives opened the book, discussed it on ranger station lawns while keeping an eye on their children at play. They planned how their daughters could grow-up and use their intelligence and skills without limits. Women of Lois’ generation made it happen and changed succeeding generations. Lois’ life … A life of service to those she can help. A life sharing love with me and our children. A life embracing gardens and animals and mountains and home. A life creating beauty from color, from words, from courage. A life curious, not content; A life caring. A life, “Seeking to serve, seeing and creating beauty, and sharing it. ” Lois’ life —- She is so loved.
