Lynette Johnson

Lynette Johnson, 62, of Missoula, Montana, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, after a courageous battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Lynette was born on June 12, 1963, in Anaconda, Montana, to Robert “Jasty” and Margaret “Peggy” Johnson. She brought light, laughter, and a wonderfully unforgettable sense of humor wherever she went. Anyone who knew Lynette knew her dry wit, legendary one-liners, and perfectly quirky spirit. Even through the challenges of Alzheimer’s, she held tightly to the humor and personality that made her so deeply loved.

She grew up in Anaconda as the youngest of six children. Her childhood was spent in the best kind of freedom, roaming Lost Creek, the Devil’s Slide, and the “A” and “C” hills with her siblings, usually armed with packed lunches and far too much imagination. Those early adventures became lifelong stories and the kind of memories that never fade.

Lynette spent many years working at Western Montana Mental Health Center in Missoula and also took on a variety of waitressing jobs, often juggling multiple roles with her signature mix of grit and independence. She was great at just about everything she did, though it was widely understood that refilling coffee cups was not exactly her strong suit. Along the way, she formed deep, lasting friendships with coworkers who became trusted confidants and steady sources of support through many of life’s important chapters.

She was also a permanent fixture at the Missoula softball fields, where she earned a reputation as a fierce pitcher and an even fiercer personality. Everyone knew Lynette for her legendary frugality, quick wit, and commitment to absolutely unforgettable behavior. The “12 Days of Lynette” became local legend, along with plastic-lined purses at all-you-can-eat buffets, her strong belief that restaurants could benefit from her own personal wine policy, and an unmatched talent for giving deeply sentimental yet highly questionable holiday gifts. Many were lucky enough to be pulled into her web of antics and adventures, and some were lucky enough to become “family”.
Two of those special people, Diane Hellman and Lynn Fischer, whose children lovingly knew her as “Auntie Lynette,” cared for Lynette during the final years of her life with extraordinary devotion, patience, and love. Her family will forever be grateful for the care, humor, and dignity they brought into Lynette’s journey. She always knew she was deeply loved.

Lynette adored dogs and had a gift for connecting with every one she met. We imagine her joyfully reunited at the Rainbow Bridge with Jasper, Ruger, Charlie, Tucker, and Tanner all ready to join her on another walk. She never passed a dog on the street without stopping to say hello, and most dogs quickly learned they didn’t have much choice in the matter.

For those who had the joy of entering her home, not only was her love for dogs obvious, but so was her deep love and commitment to her son Zach whom she sacrificially placed for adoption at birth. Pictures of Zach, his siblings and parents filled her home.  She was so proud of him.

An avid hiker, Lynette could often be found on Missoula’s favorite trails in all weather, usually accompanied by a pack of extremely spoiled dogs and very little concern for leashes. Whether it was Mount Sentinel, Pattee Canyon or Blue Mountain Trailheads, the outdoors was where she felt most at home.
She also had a deep love for classic rock and a remarkable talent for trivia, winning more radio contests than anyone should reasonably admit. Lynette loved photography, and every gathering with friends usually came with a fresh stack of photos she was eager to share.

Lynette never married, though she certainly left a few broken hearts in her wake. Her fiercely independent spirit was never something to be negotiated with. That said, those closest to her knew the fastest way to her heart was a good steak dinner, which in later years also became a surprisingly effective bargaining tool for her caregivers.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Olivia, Jessica, the amazing and compassionate caregivers at Case Management Caregiving, and the wonderful staff and fellow residents at Senescence Vistas Home, whose kindness, patience, and humor brought comfort, dignity, and joy to Lynette’s final years.

Lynette was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Johnson, whom she missed deeply, her father, Robert Johnson, and her beloved dogs.
She is survived by her siblings Cindy, Cheryl, Robbie, Karen, and Brenda, along with her cherished son, Zach.
There are never enough words left at the end. Some days the memories bring grief, and other days they bring gratitude, laughter, and everything in between.
Rest peacefully, Lynette. You were deeply loved by your family, treasured by your many friends, and will be missed beyond measure.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lynette’s memory to the Western Montana Humane Society or Five Valleys Land Trust.
A formal service will not be held, but a hike to one of her favorite places to share memories is being planned.
