Dwain Wright

Dwain C. Wright, a good and kind man, passed away peacefully in his home in Missoula, MT on May 6, 2025, at the age of 86, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Judy Helm Wright, his children Debra, Christine, Bethany, Emily, Faith, and Andrew, and their families. This includes his many adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride. Born to Arthur and Irene Wright in Decatur, Illinois, Dwain's early years alongside his older brother, Gerald, instilled in him an appreciation for the enduring bonds of family, a principle that remained a cornerstone of his life. Though his family was scattered across the country, Dwain nurtured close connections, offering unwavering love and support. He cherished the weekly updates with his children, laughing from his belly and loving with his whole heart, and always concluding with a heartfelt "I love you." Dwain, with the dedicated assistance of his wife, Judy, a personal historian, documented his life's journey and the wisdom he wished to share in his book, "Love, Dad—A series of letters, notes and essays to my family about my life and wishes, hopes and dreams for yours," published in 2002. This stands as a tangible connection for generations to come. A proud veteran, Dwain served his country with distinction in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War and beyond. His commitment to service continued with the MT Army National Guard, where he dedicated a total of 27 years of service. His military service was a defining period in his life, reflecting his deep sense of duty and his willingness to make significant sacrifices. Beyond his distinguished military career, Dwain will be fondly remembered for his quiet integrity, his strong work ethic, and his infectious chuckle that could brighten any day. He took 26 years to restore a 1966 GTO, including kids and grandkids in the project and teaching life lessons. They remember riding in parades with him and attending car shows. He was loyal forever. He stayed with the same barber, mechanic, restaurant, beef enchiladas, vanilla ice cream, Oreos, brand of jeans, and plaid shirts. Once he had found a good thing, he saw no reason to change. He had an entrepreneurial spirit; whether managing rental properties or diving into small business ventures, like “We’re Nuts!!”. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly cheering on the MT Grizzlies, losing himself in the pages of a Louis L'Amour western, and bowling the perfect game. Annual family vacations were a cherished tradition for Dwain, a testament to his commitment to creating lasting memories. Whether it was the soaking in the warmth of the hot springs at Fairmont or the breathtaking glaciers on an Alaskan cruise, these trips were opportunities for connection, laughter, and shared experiences. Dwain's presence was the heart of these adventures, filled with his gentle guidance and characteristic reminders to slow down and savor each precious moment. On their 50th wedding anniversary, Dwain and Judy gifted their family with "Ethical Will—A Legacy of Love: G&G Wright's Guide to Life." This document, brimming with their blessings and heartfelt guidance, offered a roadmap of values for each family member. In his uniquely direct and often humorous style, Dwain shared his life lessons, encouraging them to "be slow to anger, even if the dipshit in front of you never uses his blinker when turning, and just be kind to people. Always say please and thank you and keep your promises." A small celebration of Dwain's life will be held in the fall. The family will contact friends, and bowling buddies and encourages those who knew him to watch for a notice in the local newspaper (if it still exists) or on social media for further details. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dwain's honor to the Missoula Veterans Cemetery or the Missoula Food Bank, two organizations that held a special place in his heart. Dwain's legacy is one deeply rooted in love, unwavering integrity, a quiet strength, a dedication to service, and an enduring commitment to his family and the simple joys of life. He will be fondly remembered for his steady wisdom, his gentle spirit, and the boundless love he shared with all who were fortunate enough to know him.
