July 2nd, 1942 - March 18th, 2024
Leo Earl McDermott, 81, of Missoula, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024 after a long fought battle with Dementia and Cancer.
“Mac” as he was fondly called, was born on July 2, 1942 to Leo and Gladys McDermott, in Anaconda, MT, where he graduated from Anaconda High School in 1960. He went on to receive a B.A. Degree in Education from Western Montana College in Dillon, MT and also earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Montana. In 1966, Mac was drafted and became a member of the Army Reserve in Butte, MT where he served proudly for six years.
He taught high school and was an elementary school principal in Anaconda until the smelter closed in 1981 and seven schools were shut down. He then accepted a position as principal at Victor School. Later in his career, he served as a Superintendent. He retired after more than 20 years in education. For the rest of his career, he sold cars in Missoula at Flanagan's and Four Seasons Motors. Mac enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also spent time golfing with his kids, friends, and co-workers.
In 1966, he married Joanne Puccinelli and they raised four children together. The couple were married for 26 years. He later married Jacalyn Brost. He is survived by his four children, Neil Marie Peck (Cliff), Tony McDermott, Jolynn McDermott, and Terry “TJ” McDermott (Tamara), his ten grandchildren and recent great granddaughter.
A very special thanks to Dr. Sarah Scott, the 5th Floor Nursing Staff at St. Pats, Riverside Health Care Staff and Partners in Home Hospice and to his many friends and family members. Leo will be remembered for his up lifting and friendly personality.
In remembrance of Leo, he wanted to be cremated and have his ashes spread over the places he loved including the Big Hole Valley, Echo Lake, and Cable Creek. No services are planned.
