Timothy Stephen Sullivan, sculptor, father, husband, and fourth-generation Montanan, died on July 2, 2026, in Missoula, Montana. He was 76 years old.

Tim was born on October 18, 1949 in Helena, Montana, the oldest of fifteen children. He grew up in Seattle, Washington, before returning to Montana to attend Carroll College in Helena from 1968 to 1972. From 1974 to 1976, he served in the Peace Corps in the Pacific island nation of Tonga. His Peace Corps service was a formative experience in his life, and it was in Tonga that he met the love of his life, Kathy.

In March 1977, Tim and Kathy married in Seattle. The following year, they settled in Missoula, Montana, which would remain their home for the rest of Tim’s life. Even as he traveled widely throughout the Rocky Mountain West for work and other pursuits, he was always drawn back to the mountains, rivers, and open sky of his home state.

By profession, Tim was a sculptor, celebrated for works in bronze that captured the animals and histories of the American West. His art reflected a deep love for the land and its stories, and a lifetime spent observing the wild places he cherished. As a fourth-generation Montanan, his connection to the state ran deep, and he carried that pride and love of place throughout his life and work.

Tim is survived by his wife, Kathleen Ann Sullivan; their four children, Erin (b. 1979), Daniel (b. 1981), James Donald (J.D.) (b. 1984), and Shane (b. 1991); and his many siblings, extended family, and friends.

Tim will be remembered for his sense of humor and mischievous spirit, his devotion to his immediate and extended family and friends, and his enduring love for Montana, the place he called home for nearly five decades.

A memorial service will be held on October 17, 2026 along the Blackfoot River. The family asks for no flowers, but if you would like to make a donation in Tim’s honor, we ask that you donate to the Montana chapter of Trout Unlimited in his memory.

Just learned that Tim has moved on. He was an exceptional sculptor, but an even greater person. We participated in many art shows together and I was honored to have traded works with Tim. Kathy I sincerely feel for your loss, keep strong and move forward, reflect on the good times you had together and not the rough roads sometimes travelled. I send you my prayers for good times ahead. I have and will miss my good friend.. A friend in Art, George L Traicheff

How did you meet Timothy?

Tim was one of those extraordinary people that you couldn't help but love. I met Tim & Kathy in the early spring of 1996 when Kathy's younger brother Bob, brought me to Missoula to meet his sister & mom. I am truly blessed to have had Tim Sullivan as a unforgettable brother in law.

Tim was the eldest, and his siblings WORSHIPPED him! And he LOVED to tease! I remember the first time I met Tim and Kathy, my husband, Steve, and I were courting, and we had gone to Missoula to visit. I don't recall what Tim had done to (justifiably) annoy Kathy, but she was ticked and scolded him, and Tim, in his most sarcastic way, just smiled broadly, and said, "yes, peaches". I remember thinking that Kathy was a saint for not smacking him then and there. Fast forward about 8 years, and we visiting once again with our 2 oldest, who were then about 2 and 3. My 3 year old was sitting in Tim's knee, and Tim was bouncing and tickling him, and my son was laughing and saying, '"Stop, stop, I have to pee!", but Tim, the teaser, couldn't force himself to stop until he felt a warm stream of pee running down his leg! We all had a good laugh, both with Tim and at him! Oh, Tim, you will be missed! Much love to you heaven, Steve and Heather Sullivan and family

Tim was such a joy to be around. So many of us in the art life only see our friends at art shows or events. Tim and I became friends and we traveled together and shared exhibit rooms. Tim was always a great person to be with. I very much value the time I spent with him and his wife Kathy. My sincere condolences.
