Recuerdos

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Joe D. Zito, a devoted husband, proud father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, Vietnam veteran, talented woodworker, passionate baker, and the biggest fan of his grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ sports games. He passed away peacefully on April 8, 2025, at the age of 85 surrounded by his loving family.

Joe was the second of four sons, born to Joseph and Helen (Tessier) Zito in Hamilton, Montana on July 19, 1939. He spent his childhood on the family sugar beet farm in Corvallis, Montana where he eventually started working the farm with his uncles and oldest brother. Joe met Sandra Friede and they married on September 26, 1959. Together they had 2 sons Joe and Tony. He enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1961 and served in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1967.

After being discharged from the military, Joe went to work in Bonner for the Anaconda Company, Champion, and Stimpson Lumber Company until he retired in 2004.

Joe lived a life defined by service, love, and craftsmanship. He served his country honorably in the Vietnam War and carried that same dedication into every aspect of his life afterward—into his family, his passions, and the legacy he built with his own two hands.

As a woodworker, Joe created treasures that will be cherished for generations. His piggy banks, rocking horses, and chairs weren’t just projects—they were gifts of love, made with patience and pride. Whether for a birthday, a new baby, or just because, his handcrafted pieces held memories and meaning.

In the kitchen, Joe was just as gifted. His banana bread and cheesecakes were legendary, his spaghetti sauce simmered to perfection, and every meal came with a side of warmth and care. He baked with the same love he gave to his family—abundantly and without reservation.

But perhaps his greatest joy came from being a fan—cheering loudly (and proudly) from the sidelines of his grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ games. Whether it was a little league match or a school tournament, he was always there—clapping, coaching from the bleachers, or simply beaming with pride.

Joe was the rock of his family. A steady, kind, and loving presence, he offered guidance, told stories, gave the best hugs, and always made time for those he loved. His legacy is etched in wood, baked into recipes, and rooted in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

He is preceeded in death by his loving wife, Sandra J. Zito, his son Joe A. Zito and his brother Tony Zito. He is survived by his son, Tony (Laura), daughter-in-law, Karin; grandchildren, Joe (Kourtenay), Breanne (Perry), Kristen and Michael (Heidi); and great-grandchildren, Tanner, Bryce, Mackinsie, Layne and Tenley, Payton and Justin; 2 brothers and 1 half-brother and 1 half-sister. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in every lovingly worn chair, every bite of banana bread, and every cheering voice in the stands.

A full military service will be held for Joe at 2 pm on Monday April 28, 2025 at the Veteran's cemetery, 1911 Tower Street in Missoula. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Watson's Children Center in his honor.

Rest peacefully, Joe. You built more than wood and baked more than bread—you built a life full of love, and your legacy will never fade.

He was always full of hugs and baked goods. Smiles too. I'm sorry I didn't no he passed. I'd of been there for his service. Rest in peace. You gave years of friendship to so many. Debbie Shepard

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I enjoyed working with Joe while being employed at Bonner. He was a hard worker and a devoted Union representative. He was a talented person and he was always ready to jump in and help. He had a great sense of humor and a better laugh. Please accept my condolences. Greg Terrell
