Souvenirs

Theresa (Terri) Marie Murphy (Hasbrouck) passed away from organ failure on January 7th, 2025 at age 74, at the Village Health and Rehab Center in Missoula, Montana.  She was born May 30th, 1950 in Deer Lodge, Montana, the second of eleven children.  Shortly after, the small but growing family settled on a lovely five-acre farm in the Orchard Homes area in Missoula, which was to become their forever home and the source of many vivid memories for Terri.

She attended St. Anthony's Catholic grade school and Hellgate High School, though for her sophomore year, she paid her own tuition to attend Sacred Heart Academy.  It was in grade school where Terri learned her love of reading that carried her throughout her life.  After high school, she followed her older sister to Oregon, where she worked for a brief time in the canneries before returning to Missoula to attend the University of Montana, majoring in elementary education.  Instead of teaching, though, she spent the next 30 years at her alma mater as a data processor, retiring in 2009.  It was at the UM that she met her husband Louis Hasbrouck with whom she helped to raise horses in the Orchard Homes area.  Sadly, she discovered too late that she was allergic to her favorite animal, and so she instead enjoyed decorating her home with images of them.  After her divorce, she purchased a home on the north side, where she lived until her retirement.  She always wanted to get back to Oregon, though, so she made that dream come true and enjoyed a few retirement years there before returning to spend the rest of her days in Missoula.

Terri led mostly a quiet life, spending many of her hours with her large collections of books, music, and movies.  She also had a love for learning foreign languages.  Though she was not fluent, it made her happy to share a “hello” or “good-bye” in a surprising number of them!

Researching familial genealogy was also a special hobby of hers.  She was the family storykeeper, and had a knack for remembering exact dates and events in great detail.

Terri loved her family, and had no children of her own, so she especially loved her nieces and nephews. She found ways to support them – and their children – well into their early adult years, and  will be especially remembered for the gorgeous Christmas ornament collections she gifted each of her sisters' and brothers' children.

We lost a kind and generous soul who leaves behind a five-decade-long legacy of aunt-hood to 22 nieces and nephews, plus grand nieces and nephews, her sisters Margaret (Peggy) Rummell (Salem, OR), Marian Swartz (Missoula), Lucy McCandless (Pullman, WA), Patrice Sneberger (Stayton, OR), Catherine Hazenberg (Netherlands), Bibiana Reh (Missoula), and brothers Steven Murphy (Missoula) and Joseph Murphy (Columbia Falls, MT).

She joins her mother Mae and father Sylvester, brother Kevin, sister Melinda, niece Rhiannon Swartz, and nephew Luke McCandless in the arms of the Lord.

Funeral services will be held at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church on Thursday, January 16th at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon. Interment will take place the same day at 2:30 p.m. at New St. Mary's Cemetery in Missoula, Montana.
